Ancór Chamber Choir was founded in 2005 by conductor Cecilia Madden and has become one of the most exciting musical ensembles to emerge from the Mid-West region. Today, the choir consists of thirty singers who come from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities but who love singing together.
Ancór embraces a wide repertoire, incorporating music from the Renaissance to the 21st century, both sacred and secular. Ancór has performed several times at UCH Limerick, while our annual sold-out Christmas concerts take place in the beautiful and historic surroundings of St Mary’s Cathedral. Ancór also undertakes charitable performances including recent performances for Milford Care Centre, the Midwest Cancer Society, the Alzheimers Society and the Special Olympics to name but a few.
In addition to presenting concerts and singing at charitable events, we occasionally like to compete in choral festivals around Ireland. We have been very successful at all the major festivals in Cork, Limerick and New Ross. Most recently we won four major prizes at the 2015 Limerick Choral Festival – Best A Capella performance, Best Limerick Choir, Best Choir of the Festival and first prize in the Sacred Music competition.
In June, 2014, Ancór travelled to Italy and performed in San Michele e Gaetano in Florence, with concerts ICKSP Seminary at Gricigliano and St George’s Anglican Church in Venice. In 2012, the choir travelled to Paris at the invitation of the Irish College in Paris to sing at their St Patrick’s Day Mass, held at the magnificent Saint-Étienne-du-Mont church close to the College.
